There are many fundamental human constraints: lifespan, cognition, perception, knowledge, etc.
However, time and energy are arguably the two most fundamental constraints on being human. Nearly every other limitation, the above + wealth, skill, relationships, etc. can be improved to some degree.
Time and energy cannot. In a sense, life is the process of converting a limited amount of time and energy into experiences, achievements and relationships.
1. Time: the non-renewable resource
Time is unique because you can never earn more of it. Everyone, from students to billionaires to world leaders, gets the same 24 hours per day.
This creates three important consequences:
- Every “yes” is also a “no”
Choosing one path means giving up countless others. If you spend 10 years becoming a doctor, you cannot simultaneously become an Olympic athlete or concert pianist. - Compounding matters enormously
Small habits repeated over years become transformative. Likewise, small amounts of procrastination or poor decisions also compound. - Life is finite
Even if medicine eventually extends lifespan, it will still be finite (I guess). This forces prioritization and is arguably what gives meaning to many of our choices.
One way to think about it is that your life isn’t measured only in years; it’s measured in attention. A weekend fully present with loved ones can feel richer than a month spent distracted.
2. Energy: the resource that determines what you can actually do
Time tells you how long you have. Energy determines what you’re capable of during that time.
Energy comes in several forms:
Physical energy
- Sleep
- Nutrition
- Fitness
- Recovery
- Health
- Etc.
Mental energy
- Concentration
- Creativity
- Decision-making
- Learning
- Etc.
Emotional energy
- Stress tolerance
- Motivation
- Resilience
- Social interaction
- Etc.
Many people optimize their calendar but neglect their energy (especially when the calendar is busy!!!). Eight hours exhausted can produce less valuable work than two hours deeply focused.
The Interaction Between Time & Energy
These resources are not independent. Imagine four scenarios:
| Time | Energy | Result |
| High | High | Peak performance and learning |
| High | Low | Plenty of opportunity, but little execution |
| Low | High | Productive but forced to prioritize |
| Low | Low | Burnout or survival mode |
Most productivity advice focuses on managing time. High performers often focus even more on managing energy.
Why money is different
People often think money is the limiting factor. But money is actually a tool for converting one resource into another.
For example, money can buy:
- Convenience
- Delegation
- Better healthcare
- Better education
- More comfortable travel
What it cannot buy is:
- More hours today
- Youth
- Perfect health
- Infinite focus
- Unlimited motivation
This is why many successful people eventually realize that protecting their time and energy is more valuable than accumulating additional wealth.
The hidden cost: opportunity cost
Every action has an invisible cost.
Reading a book means not watching Netflix.
Working late means not spending the evening with family.
Training for a marathon means less time for other hobbies.
This doesn’t mean one choice is objectively better than another—it means that because time and energy are limited, every choice excludes alternatives.
A practical framework
A useful way to think about life is:
- Time is your budget.
- Energy is your spending power.
- Attention is where you invest.
- Meaning is the return you hope to get.
Someone with average talent but excellent management of these four resources will often accomplish more than someone exceptionally talented who spends them unconscously.
This is why many philosophers consider time to be our scarcest resource and many neuroscientists consider energy (particularly the brain’s limited capacity for sustained attention and decision-making) to be our most immediate bottleneck.
In my job, I realize that by not managing the time properly (and also being very dependent on time-management) the energy level suffers.
My intuition is to focus on energy management and this way, trying to cope with this very busy calendar. 🙂
